On the 3rd of March, Mr.Hans Obdeijn on behalf of United Nation
Population Fund signed the new Country Programme Action Plan "CPAP"
for 2007-2011 with Mr.Abdulkareem Al-Arhabi, Minister of
Planning and International Cooperation on behalf of Yemeni
government.

The signing ceremony coincided with the review of the last
programme cycle with UNFPA’s national partners.
In the opening ceremony Mr.Al-Arhabi gave a speech, expressing
the importance of UNFPA role in helping Yemen in population
issues. He also expressed the challenges which face Yemen.
Despite the decrease of population rate from 3.5% to little
higher than 3%, there are yet an opportunity for Yemen through
the new country porgramme to face these challenges.

Al-Arhabi emphasized the important of coordination between UNFPA
and other organizations to improve the government’s
infrastructure and institutions for a better service delivery,
especially reproductive health services, to remote areas. In the
end of his speech, Al-Arhabi pledged participants to actively
participate in assessing the last programme cycle 2002-2006.

From his part, Hans Obdeijn, UNFPA representative, gave a speech
in which he expressed his privilege to attend this meeting along
with UNFPA’s partners in Yemen. "We will review the
achievements and lessons learned from the last programme cycle
2002-2006. The signature of our CPAP - signals the start of the
new progamme cycle 2007-2011" Obdeijn said.

"The CPAP is the result of a long, joint and participatory
process: CCA-UNDAF-CPD-National Workshop. Finding the best
supportive role UNFPA can play – together with its key and
potential partners - in Yemen will continue to address its
population issues. Review of our last programme cycle: its
achievements, its weaknesses, and more importantly study lessons
learned" Obdeijn added. UNFPA here is to help. We are here to
assist those Yemeni partners who want to make Yemen a better
place and provide its new generation a better outlook. My team
at UNFPA CO Yemen is relatively new, but highly motivated. We
have all the institutional support and backing we need. We are
here to work with you and to offer all what we have to serve our
ultimate goals in helping to resolve population issue in Yemen.
