Hajja October
29, 2007
A part of his
field visit to Yemeni governorates chosen in coordination and
consultation with the Yemeni government for UNFPA's New Country
Programme Cycle 2007/2011, the United Nations Population Fund
(UNFPA) Representative, Mr. Hans Obdeijn, visited Hajja
governorate where he met with Mr.Ahmed Mujawar, the Hajja
governor. The UNFPA framework and its working mechanism in the
current period was presented and discussed in the meeting. The
meeting also tackled choosing two districts from the governorate
to start immediate activities. The discussions concluded with
the preliminary choice of the Harad and Al-Mahabisha districts
for UNFPA assistance in the governorate.

During the
meeting, Mr.Mugwar mentioned challenges that face development in
Hajja governorate, such as those related to geographical
variations, road difficulties, and the population density of 1.5
million distributed throughout 21 districts. The discussion also
included the importance of decentralization efforts during the
coming period, based on Yemeni government trends and decisions,
declared previously, to offer all necessary facilities for
project implementation to partners in the governorate and other
concerned places.

The meeting
concluded with common understandings that reproductive health
and family planning are key to addressing population issues in
Yemen, and that empowering women and supporting their work
prospects and their access to health services, especially in
rural and remote areas, are also important factors for success.
The meeting was
attended by the two Deputies of the governorate and the Director
General of the Health Office. Obdeijn also met with key partners
in the governorate from the offices of Health, Planning, Youth
and Sports, Education, and Endowment and Guidance, in addition
to NGOs. The visit to Hajja was one of series of visits made by
the UNFPA representative to other Yemeni governorates (Hodiedha,
Aden, Hadramoute, Ebb, Al-Mahweet, and Hajja) chosen for the new
Country Programme with its three components: Reproductive
Health, Population Development, and Gender.
