Sana'a, 13 March
2008
The Yemen Times newspaper, in cooperation with the United Nation
Population Fund (UNFPA), organized a seminar on the 13th
of March to present Rapid Analysis results related to the
consequences of population growth on the different sectors of
society.
The seminar aimed to raise awareness of this issue among journalists
because of their important role in raising public awareness
about the future risks of continuing the current high rates of
population growth. The analysis indicates that the total Yemen
population may reach 60
million – almost three times the current figure – in 2050 if
population growth continues at the current high rate (3.01%).

The meeting presented the results of the Rapid Analysis, followed by a
discussion with the UNFPA representative on the population issue
in Yemen. In the discussion, it was emphasized that Yemen can
face this issue through
establishing vigorous, comprehensive and quality reproductive
health and family planning services. Establishing such services
provides the solution to Yemen’s formidable population growth
challenge, as was unequivocally established during the National
Population Conference of December 2007.
The meeting, which attended by 20 journalists, concluded by setting
topics that will be tackled by journalists and published in the
Yemen Times in the near future.
