Sana'a May 14
The
Ministry of Endowments & Guidance (MoEG) and the United Nations
Population Fund (UNFPA) signed a memorandum of understanding and
work plan on May 14, 2008, at the Ministry premises. According
to the work plan, the MoEG will conduct one-week religious
campaign during June in the governorates targeted by UNFPA’s new
Country Programme Cycle activities. These governorates are:
Aden, Hadramout, Ibb, Al-Mahweet, Hajah, and Hodeidah. During
the campaigns, the mosque preachers, male and female religious
guides, and health educators will conduct awareness-raising
activities among different groups on the importance of family
planning from the perspectives of religion and health, including
birth spacing for the sake of health of the mother and newborn
and correcting any religious or health misconceptions about this
issue.

The campaign will begin with a two-day workshop in which
participants will receive training on how to deliver the
campaign’s religious and health messages to members of local
communities in the targeted governorates. Media activities for
raising awareness will be associated with these religious
activities in order to unify religious and information messages
on this important family health issue.
It is noteworthy that this campaign is being carried out in
coordination with the Ministry of Public Health and Population
and the National Population Council. This activity is a
continuation of the activities carried out by the MoEG over the
course of the UNFPA current and former programmes. H.E Judge
Hammoud Al-Hetar, the Minister of the MoEG, and Mr. Hans Obdeijn,
the UNFPA representative, signed the plan.
