Sexual violence, such as rape is often heightening in times of conflicts.  In order to prevent and manage possible health consequences, rape survivors must have access to clinical care, including supportive counseling, as soon as possible after the incident.

To improve the clinical management of survivors of rape in Yemen, UNFPA, through the GBV sub cluster and RH Inter Agency Working Group of the health cluster organized a 4-day training on clinical management of rape survivors. The training targeted 33 qualified health care providers, including medical officers, health/medical coordinators, clinical officers, midwives and nurses from different national and international NGOs in Sana’a, Ibb, Taizz, Amran, Sada’a and Al Hudaydah governorates

The training is a critical step in improving capacity of healthcare providers to respond to sexual violence in such an emergency using survivor friendly approaches.

“We really need such a training on regular basis so that we are equipped with the most up to date information. This is the first time I attended such a training with forensics and psychiatrists. I benefited lots from this training. Now I have a good understanding on dealing with the rape survivor whether they are a refugee or internal displaced person, said Dr. Muna Al-Hamdani, SGBV focal point at International Medical Corps.
