Intensified fighting in Yemen has displaced nearly 400,000 people since January 2019 to date. In response, the rapid response mechanism led by UNFPA has been providing immediate relief items to newly displaced persons, which includes ready to eat food provided by WFP, basic hygiene kits provided by UNICEF and female dignity kits provided by UNFPA. Since June 2018 more than 1.6 million people have been reached through this response.
Difficulties in identifying and enrolling newly displaced persons have led to delays in providing immediate relief. To overcome this, UNFPA has initiated a mechanism to enroll all newly displaced persons. This would not only speed up the delivery in assistance of the rapid response mechanism but also help to accelerate the multi-purpose cash response provided by UNICEF partners, emergency food assistance led by WFP and the provision of shelter and non-food items. The enrolment will also reduce the risk of excluding beneficiaries.
UNFPA already commenced the enrollment process in Hajjah Governorate, where intense fighting has displaced more than 200,000 people since February 2019. This will be followed by Al Dhale’e Governorate, where more than 60,000 people have been displaced in recent weeks. UNFPA will expand the mechanism countrywide as funds become available.
