1.         Organizational Location

The Communication Specialist post is located in the UNFPA Yemen Country Office in Sana’a. The incumbent will report to the UNFPA Representative.

2.         Job Purpose

The incumbent will be responsible to strengthen the information flow and visibility of UNFPA’s assistance by leading the implementation of the communication strategy of the Country Office; while highlighting the reproductive health, women’s protection needs, and rapid response mechanism related to the humanitarian response in Yemen and the ways in which UNFPA has responds to those needs.

3.         Major Activities/Expected Results

1. Ensures implementation of the communication strategy:

  1. Lead on gathering inputs and information required for the production of relevant advocacy products, including online and digital products, as well as coordinate dissemination of these products;
  2. Identification of storylines and drafting of substantive articles on UNFPA’s response in Yemen;
  3. Ensure a smooth flow of success/human interest stories and communication materials to feed into situation reports, updates, newsletters, website and other communication channels, through coordination with UNFPA hubs and implementing partners;
  4. Ensure communication and advocacy tools and products, including briefing notes, booklets, brochures, infographics reflect UNFPA branding and visibility guidelines;
  5. Lead coordination with communications solutions agencies, creative agencies, film-makers and radio content production agencies, PR agencies, media agencies, design studios for the development of creative communications outputs.
  6. Build the capacity of UNFPA staff and implementing partners to communicate effectively about UNFPA’s work. 

 

2. Engage with national and international media to raise visibility of UNFPA mandated issues:

  1. Maintain good media relations with local, regional, and international reporters, to enhance their understanding of UNFPA’s mandate;
  2. Lead and strengthen the journalist network ‘Journalists for Population and Development established by UNFPA;
  3. Ensured access for journalists to subject matter experts as well as organizing media field missions to ensure appropriate visibility for UNFPA’s mandated areas of work;
  4. Monitor local and international media coverage for UNFPA and issues relevant to UNFPA’s mandate and share regularly with management, regional office and headquarters;
  5. Draft press releases, fact sheets and other materials for use by UNFPA at the national, regional and global levels;
  6. Prepare talking points, speeches and briefs for the Representative for media engagement.

 

3. Manage UNFPA Yemen Arabic/English website, social media platforms and other public information sites:

  1. Ensure the UNFPA Yemen Arabic/English websites are updated regularly with quality and timely preparation of the content;
  2. Generate content, reflecting results, achievements, success stories to feature in social media platforms;
  3. Develop innovative campaigns to increase followers and viewership of UNFPA social media platforms.

 

4. Lead communication and visibility for campaigns, launch of flagship reports and commemoration of UN days:

  1. Lead the overall implementation of public information campaigns and key UN days relevant to UNFPA’s mandate;
  2. Lead the promotion and dissemination of corporate advocacy materials for launching flagship initiatives and publication, as well as public awareness campaigns.

 

5. Support the communication and visibility for resource mobilization:

  1. Ensure content generation for the implementation of donor visibility plans;
  2. Ensure branding of donor support facilities in line with UNFPA and donor branding guidelines;
  3. Generate content in terms of human interest stories, media coverage, photographs on donor supported interventions.
